7th Anniversary Series | Student Spotlight: From Wuhan to Silicon Valley

Among the hundreds of students HYP Global has supported over the past seven years, Gloria Hao's story is a compelling example of what a career transition through PMBC can look like.

A Study-Abroad Dream, Delayed by the Pandemic

Gloria graduated from a finance and economics university in Wuhan with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. In 2021, she joined a state-owned enterprise to begin her career, while her original plan to study abroad was postponed by the pandemic. In November 2023, she enrolled in PMBC, taking one math course and two foundational programming courses — a solid foundation that helped her secure an admission offer from Santa Clara University (SCU).

Why California

Choosing between New York and California, Gloria ultimately chose California: the weather suited her better, the area around SCU was safe and convenient, with essential amenities within walking distance. Most importantly, the university sits in the heart of Silicon Valley, surrounded by well-known tech companies — offering limitless possibilities for her future career.

From Foundation to Breakthrough

Gloria was admitted to the Master of Science in Information Systems program under SCU's Leavey School of Business. In her first semester, she took Financial Accounting and two programming language courses, with classes running from afternoon to evening, Tuesday through Thursday. The pace was fast, with quizzes before each class and assignments afterward — intense at first, but manageable with consistent effort. She found the math and Python foundation she built during PMBC invaluable in helping her adapt to the pace of U.S. classrooms, and lecture recordings let her review complex topics at her own pace.

Outside academics, she also tried new things, like learning ballet at a studio near campus — her way of unwinding amid a busy study schedule.

Next Stop: Data Analyst

Gloria's career goal is to become a Data Analyst in Silicon Valley after graduation, combining her accounting background with programming skills to deliver effective business solutions. After a year or two of work experience, she plans to pursue a Juris Doctor (JD) with a focus on Technology Law, further bridging business, technology, and legal expertise.

In Her Own Words

Looking back on her journey from a classroom in Wuhan to a campus in Silicon Valley, Gloria says she's gained more than academic knowledge — she's learned to manage her time more efficiently and maintain a positive mindset, and made lasting friendships with classmates from places like India. She hopes to one day share her experience to inspire others planning their own study-abroad and career journeys.

From one math course and two programming classes to a graduate classroom in Silicon Valley — Gloria's story is a small reflection of what PMBC has helped make possible, one student at a time.
