Hello, I’m Chenxi. I am a student in the Master of Science in Business Analytics program at the Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, where I also serve as an official student ambassador.

I entered the Pepperdine MSBA program in Fall 2021. During the application process, I received admission offers from several U.S. universities. I ultimately chose Pepperdine because the program aligned closely with my academic background, career plans, and long-term goals.

From Psychology to Business Analytics

I majored in Psychology and minored in Business Management as an undergraduate.

Although I did not come from a traditional computer science or data science background, my training in statistics and business helped me recognize the growing importance of data analytics in modern business decision-making.

Business analytics is an interdisciplinary field that connects data, business, and industry applications. Across finance, technology, Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), and media, data analytics can help companies identify problems and make better decisions.

For students with interdisciplinary backgrounds like mine, an MSBA provides a platform for combining existing academic strengths with data analytics skills.

Why I Chose Pepperdine’s MSBA

When selecting a graduate program, I focused on several factors.

Broad Interdisciplinary Applications

Pepperdine’s MSBA emphasized the practical application of business data rather than theory alone.

The curriculum helped students understand how analytical tools could be used to solve real business problems. This practical focus was valuable for students interested in working across different industries.

Developing the Whole Person

The Pepperdine Graziadio Business School emphasized the educational philosophy of “Developing the Whole Person.”

The school focused not only on professional capabilities but also on leadership, communication, and personal values. Its goal was to help students become well-rounded business professionals.

Greater Interaction through Small Classes

The average MSBA class included approximately 26 students.

The small-class format gave me more opportunities to communicate directly with professors. Rather than relying solely on lectures, classes often involved discussions about business cases and industry challenges. Professors also encouraged students to express their own perspectives.

An Extensive Alumni Network

The Graziadio Business School had an alumni network spanning California and industries across the United States.

The school invited alumni and corporate leaders to participate in events and share their experiences, helping students understand industry trends while expanding their professional networks.

An Intensive, Practice-Oriented Curriculum

Pepperdine’s MSBA followed a one-year curriculum consisting of three terms. Each term lasted approximately 15 weeks.

Every term was divided into two sections of around seven weeks each, with a one-week transition period between them.

This intensive structure allowed students to study business analytics systematically within a relatively short period.

A Fast Academic Pace

Each section generally included three to four courses, with individual class sessions lasting approximately four hours.

The curriculum covered data analytics tools, business problem analysis, and industry case applications. Because of the demanding schedule, students needed to maintain a high level of academic engagement.

Team Projects and Collaboration

Many MSBA assignments were completed through group work.

This approach helped me become familiar with the teamwork expected in American business environments. It also enabled students with limited professional experience to develop their communication, coordination, and project management skills.

An Open Classroom Environment

Pepperdine professors brought both academic knowledge and industry experience into the classroom.

Students could discuss technical topics, industry trends, and career development directly with faculty members in an open and interactive environment.

For students preparing to enter an MSBA program, I would recommend becoming familiar with:

  • Python

  • Structured Query Language (SQL)

  • Data analysis in Microsoft Excel

Developing these skills before enrollment can make it easier to adjust to the curriculum.

Studying on the Malibu Campus

Pepperdine University is located in Malibu, California, and the campus environment was one of the reasons I chose the university.

The Graziadio Business School offered learning and collaboration spaces with ocean views. Between classes, students could relax on campus or discuss academic work with classmates.

This combination of study, nature, and social interaction was a distinctive part of the Pepperdine experience.

Career Support at Pepperdine Graziadio

Career support was another important reason I considered the Pepperdine MSBA.

The Career Center began helping students with career planning early in the program, allowing them to prepare gradually for the recruitment process.

Career Preparation from the First Term

Students could participate in career development courses during their first term. Topics included:

  • Résumé reviews

  • Personal branding

  • Interview preparation

  • Professional self-presentation

These activities helped students understand the U.S. recruitment process.

Individual Career Advising

Career advisors met individually with students and provided guidance based on their backgrounds and goals.

Support included:

  • Résumé development

  • LinkedIn profile optimization

  • Mock interviews

  • Job-search progress reviews

The school also shared information about internship and full-time employment opportunities.

Employment Outcomes Shared by the Program

According to the program data shared at the time of the Fall 2021 interview:

  • Approximately 50% of graduates had received a job offer by graduation

  • Approximately 68% had received a job offer within three months after graduation

  • The median starting salary was approximately $100,000 per year

Some graduates went on to work for companies including Tesla, Boeing, and Bank of America.

These figures reflect information shared during the original interview period and should not be treated as current employment data.
