March 2026 — HYP Global Intelligence, the market intelligence arm of HYP Global, today released its 2025–2026 U.S. Graduate Enrollment Market Intelligence Report. Continuing HYP Global's approach of using a proprietary, in-house survey instrument, this year's edition significantly expands the scope, depth, and sample size of the research compared to prior years — drawing first-hand responses from 128 study abroad consultants across more than 120 agencies in mainland China and Taiwan, collected in March 2026. Respondents span the full agent ecosystem — from boutique studios to national chains — and collectively advise thousands of prospective graduate students each year.
Key Finding: U.S. Demand Is Cooling but Not Collapsing, ROI Now Drives Decisions
The report finds that 63% of agents report fewer U.S.-bound inquiries compared to last year, yet demand for top-30 programs remains resilient — students are not abandoning the U.S., they are becoming more selective. Cost sensitivity is at a multi-year high, with students now demanding clear employment outcomes and measurable returns before committing to any program. Employment-linked offerings — including U.S. internships, AI skills training, and Pre-Master Boot Camp (PMBC) pathway programs — are the most-requested new product types across HYP Global's entire agent network. Notably, 74% of agents said they prioritize substantive faculty expertise and real success cases over brand recognition alone when evaluating partner institutions.

Market Flow Shifts: Destinations Diversify
63% of agents report a year-over-year decline in U.S./North America inquiries, with the decline reaching 74.22% within the mainland China sample. At the same time, 55% report an increase in Hong Kong/Singapore inquiries (56.25% within the mainland China sample), and 47% report rising interest in joint-degree or cooperative programs (26.56% within the mainland China sample). As one Shanghai-based agent noted, the students still pursuing U.S. study are more committed than ever, while those who dropped off were largely on the fence to begin with. Hong Kong, Singapore, and joint-degree programs are emerging as credible structural alternatives, and the remaining U.S.-bound applicant pool increasingly skews toward students who are academically prepared, career-focused, and willing to pay a premium — provided it is justified by program quality, location, and post-graduation support.
Applicant Profile: A Rising Share of Working Professionals, Greater Weight on Rankings and Employability
Traditional fresh graduates remain the majority of U.S.-bound applicants at 68%, but the share of professionals 2–3 years post-graduation has risen to 27%, with those 5+ years post-graduation now at 5%. On priorities, city location and employment opportunities (71%) and tuition cost-effectiveness/ROI (68%) now top the list, followed by global rankings such as QS/THE (62%). U.S. News' domestic ranking has fallen in importance to 38%, program/field-specific ranking to 29%, and immigration/permanent residency goals to just 10%. As one Chengdu-based agent put it, students now ask about job placement rates before they ask about the curriculum — the most significant shift she has observed in ten years of consulting.
Program Demand and Admission Trends
Computer science/software engineering (85%), data analytics/data science (79%), business analytics (77%), electrical/computer engineering (72%), and finance & accounting (63%) remain the most sought-after fields for U.S. master's study. Notably, 45% of agents report that top-30 admissions have become easier to access this cycle — a short-term recruitment window — while only 18% report increased difficulty. When forced to choose between ranking and scholarship, 66% of students said they would prefer a top 20–30 school at full price over a mid-tier (top 40–60) school with roughly 50% scholarship, or a lower-ranked school with a near-full scholarship — underscoring how heavily ranking still weighs in decision-making.
Key Barriers to U.S. Study
Geopolitical concerns and personal safety (44%) rank as the single most critical factor influencing U.S. study decisions, followed by degree depreciation and post-graduation employment difficulty (30%) and economic conditions/heightened cost sensitivity (24%). While none of these barriers are fully within a university's control, the report notes all three can be addressed through content — published placement data, alumni testimonials, scholarship pathways, and clear communication of campus safety and international student support resources.
Unmet Demand and Product Gaps
Among HYP Global's agent network, the most-requested new program types are top-30 master's program pathways (89%), premium U.S. internship programs with guaranteed placement (52%), budget master's programs at lower-ranked, lower-tuition institutions (42%), and joint-degree/cooperative programs (34%). In open-ended responses, agents also flagged strong demand for post-graduation U.S. job support, China re-entry career support, AI/tech skill certification, and programs under $40K in tuition.
