SCU MSBA Student Spotlight: Zoe’s Journey from the Film Industry to Silicon Valley Tech—Choosing the Right Program and Growing Through Practice

Recently, at the Santa Clara University Graduate School event in Shanghai hosted by HYP Global, current SCU student Zoe joined remotely to share her experience.

Zoe majored in Finance as an undergraduate and later pursued graduate studies in film production and marketing. She previously worked at Tencent Pictures and Alibaba Pictures and also gained entrepreneurial experience in digital media and educational products.

Although her previous academic and professional background appeared to have little direct connection with the technology sector, she chose to enroll in Santa Clara University’s Master of Science in Business Analytics program. Her presentation gave the audience a clear and inspiring picture of what excellence looks like in practice.

When selecting a graduate program, Zoe had no hesitation because her goal had been clear from the beginning: to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and business and complete a professional transition within Silicon Valley’s technology ecosystem.

Shortly after beginning the program, Zoe attended a presentation by the University President and found the remarks deeply inspiring.

Instead of simply keeping those thoughts to herself, she took the initiative to email the President and sincerely shared what she had learned and how the presentation had affected her.

To her surprise, the President replied personally and invited her to the office for a one-on-one conversation.

This willingness to express herself and actively build connections has been one of the key reasons Zoe has continued to discover new opportunities throughout her international education journey.

The Semester Experience: Learning in the Age of AI Means Exploring in Public

From September to December, Zoe’s immersive experience at SCU came less from gradually becoming familiar with the campus and more from seeing how closely the University’s education connects with real industry needs.

Many instructors have previously worked in technology companies. Assignments are based on genuine business challenges, while Career Center workshops directly address the skills and concerns most relevant to today’s workplace.

The program is built around practical learning. The depth with which AI is integrated into the curriculum far exceeded Zoe’s expectations and gave her a strong sense of accomplishment.

With a clear goal in mind, she treated every course and practical project as an opportunity to learn, reflect, and accumulate experience for the future.

Data analytics courses use real company data and simulate professional working environments throughout the entire process—from data cleaning and modeling to developing business recommendations.

Professors encourage students to use AI tools to improve efficiency, but they also emphasize that understanding the underlying logic must come before relying on technology. The goal is to ensure students become thoughtful problem-solvers rather than people who merely know how to operate tools.

Zoe’s commitment to “learning in public” left a particularly strong impression on me.

She regularly shares course notes, project outcomes, and personal reflections on platforms such as LinkedIn. This process not only helps her organize her thoughts but also attracts the attention of industry professionals, sometimes creating unexpected opportunities for conversation and collaboration.

Her willingness to share her work and build a personal brand has helped her distinguish herself from other students.

Zoe’s classmates come from a wide range of backgrounds, including finance, computer science, and media. Reliability and commitment are central principles within their teams.

During group projects, members actively step in to help one another rather than avoiding responsibility.

As Zoe explained, an outstanding team does not necessarily consist entirely of top-performing individuals. Instead, it enables each person to contribute their strengths to the fullest extent.

Zoe strengthens her academic knowledge and builds relationships with professors through teaching assistant positions. Through the program’s Practicum, she works on real business needs presented by companies.

The Career Center also offers one-on-one résumé reviews, mock interviews, and employer information sessions, giving students access to interview opportunities without needing to leave the local area.

Zoe never waits passively for opportunities. She actively seeks them out, participates fully, and makes the most of every resource available to her.

She regularly attends AI-related events, ranging from technical presentations by major technology companies to startup Demo Days. These experiences have broadened her perspective while helping her meet industry mentors.

Women’s organizations at the University have also connected her with peers in the technology industry, providing valuable support and opportunities to share resources.

Zoe never limits herself to the identity of a “student.”

Instead, she approaches every opportunity as an active participant in the industry, constantly building connections and exploring new possibilities.

Three Mindset Shifts: The Foundations of Growth That Matter More Than Knowledge

Zoe explained that her experience at SCU has given her more than technical skills in data analytics and AI applications. It has also led to three important changes in how she thinks.

1. Networking Is About Exchanging Value, Not Transactional Socializing

By taking the initiative to email the University President and sharing her learning outcomes on professional platforms, Zoe came to understand that meaningful connections are not created simply by asking others for help. They are built by creating and communicating value.

When you express your ideas sincerely and demonstrate the value you can offer, you naturally attract people who share your interests and goals.

2. Leadership Means Maximizing the Efficiency of the Team

During the 2025 Analytics Showdown, Zoe worked closely with four teammates and ultimately won first place.

The experience taught her that leadership is not about accomplishing everything alone. It is about trusting your teammates, assigning responsibilities effectively, and ensuring that everyone’s strengths can be fully utilized.

3. Career Signals Determine Your Professional Visibility

Zoe consistently focuses on developing her personal brand and professional influence.

Through competition awards, project outcomes, and industry-focused content, she sends clear “career signals” that help her build a recognizable profile in the field of AI and business analytics.
