From April to May 2023, HYP Global hosted a series of webinars featuring current students from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law. The sessions invited three graduate students, Ellen, Summer, and Kai, to share their personal experiences studying programs including LLM in U.S. Law and Dispute Resolution, as well as their experiences pursuing education in California, campus life, and future career planning. During the webinars, the current students shared insights from various perspectives, including why they chose Pepperdine University, how they prepared their law school applications, their learning experiences, the adjustment process for international students, and career development strategies. Through these sessions, prospective students gained a more direct understanding of the program features offered by the Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law’s Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, as well as the real experiences of international students studying at a U.S. law school. Introduction to Pepperdine University and the Straus Institute Programs
Founded in 1937, Pepperdine University is a private university located in Malibu, California.
During the webinar, students introduced the university’s beautiful coastal campus environment and highlighted the advantages of studying in Southern California. Located near the Los Angeles metropolitan area, Pepperdine provides students with access to abundant academic, professional, cultural, and career development resources.
The webinar focused on the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, which is part of the Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law and is one of the university’s well-known legal education programs.
The students shared that the Dispute Resolution program has attracted significant attention in the field and welcomes applicants from diverse countries and professional backgrounds.
Current Student Experiences: Why Choose Pepperdine University?
During the webinar, the three current Straus Institute students introduced their academic backgrounds and explained why they chose Pepperdine University.
One student was pursuing the LLM in U.S. Law program and had previously completed the LLM in Dispute Resolution program at the Straus Institute, giving her extensive experience with the university and its programs.
Another student was currently enrolled in the LLM in Dispute Resolution program and shared her personal academic journey and experiences after joining Straus Institute.
Another student came from an undergraduate background in the arts. After several years of professional experience, she hoped to transition her career direction through graduate-level legal studies and decided to apply for law-related programs.
She shared that although she had received admission offers from other LLM programs, she ultimately chose Pepperdine because of the advantages of the Los Angeles region, her personal career goals, and her appreciation for the university’s campus environment.
Learning Experience at the Straus Institute
Regarding graduate-level legal studies, the students explained that the U.S. classroom model differs significantly from many traditional learning approaches.
Law school education in the United States places strong emphasis on classroom participation, case analysis, and discussion-based learning. Students are expected to complete extensive readings before class and actively engage in academic discussions.
During their studies at Straus Institute, students have opportunities to interact with classmates from diverse legal and cultural backgrounds.
The webinar highlighted that the program attracts both international students and U.S. domestic students. In some courses, LLM students study alongside JD (Juris Doctor) students, creating opportunities for broader classroom discussions and academic exchange.
Students noted that this diverse learning environment not only enhances their understanding of legal concepts but also improves their cross-cultural communication skills.
Study Focus: Dispute Resolution
The Straus Institute is widely recognized for its focus on Dispute Resolution.
During the webinar, students introduced the program’s curriculum, which covers areas such as Mediation and Negotiation. The courses emphasize not only legal theories but also practical skills and real-world applications.
Students shared that the program attracts legal professionals and international students from around the world. Some students enter the program with previous legal experience and hope to expand their professional expertise by gaining a deeper understanding of the U.S. dispute resolution system.
For students interested in pursuing careers in international law, understanding different legal systems and developing communication and negotiation skills are important parts of their academic journey.
Learning Experience in the LLM in U.S. Law Program
Students also shared their experiences adapting to the LLM in U.S. Law program.
Because the U.S. legal education system differs from those of many other countries, international students need time to become familiar with case analysis methods, classroom discussion formats, and legal English communication.
The students explained that the initial stage requires adapting to extensive English reading assignments and active classroom participation. However, as courses progress, students gradually develop more effective learning strategies.
Throughout the program, students are expected not only to acquire legal knowledge but also to develop independent analytical skills and the ability to express their perspectives clearly.
International Student Life at Pepperdine University
During the webinar, multiple students shared their experiences as international students at Pepperdine University.
The Straus Institute brings together students from various countries and regions, creating a highly international academic environment.
Students explained that communicating with classmates from different cultural backgrounds is one of the most valuable aspects of graduate study.
In addition, the lifestyle and resources available in California provide students with diverse opportunities outside the classroom. Students can take advantage of the Los Angeles region to participate in social activities, expand professional networks, and gain a deeper understanding of the local legal and business environment.
Career Planning for Law School Students
Beyond academic studies, career development was another important topic discussed during the webinars.
Students emphasized that after pursuing legal studies in the United States, individuals should develop career plans based on their own backgrounds and professional goals.
For international students, improving legal expertise is only one part of career preparation. They should also focus on gaining practical experience, building professional networks, and exploring potential career paths.
