The webinar focused on the topic of “What to Prepare Before Arrival”, aiming to help incoming students make effective plans before officially starting their graduate school journey in the United States.

Important Considerations for F-1 Student Visa Preparation

For international students planning to study in the United States, obtaining a visa is one of the most important steps before departure.

During the webinar, the speakers introduced the application process for the F-1 Student Visa and emphasized the importance of carefully reviewing personal information when preparing visa documents.

For students who completed their undergraduate studies outside the United States, applying for an F-1 visa is typically required before beginning their graduate programs. During the preparation process, students should carefully review the documents provided by the university and ensure that all personal information is accurate.

The speakers specifically reminded students to carefully check important details after receiving university documents, including their name, date of birth, and other personal information, as incorrect information may affect the visa application process.

In addition, when completing the DS-160 form (Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application), students should ensure that all information provided is truthful and accurate and become familiar with their application details.

During the visa interview, officers may ask questions based on the information provided in the application materials. Therefore, understanding and confirming all submitted information in advance is essential.

How to Choose Flights to the United States?

Flight arrangements are another important concern for many incoming students.

During the webinar, the speakers shared transportation options for traveling to Lehigh University based on flight conditions at the time.

Since Lehigh University is located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and is relatively close to the New York metropolitan area, many students choose airports around New York as their arrival destinations.

The webinar introduced two commonly used airports:

  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

Among these options, Newark Liberty International Airport is relatively closer to the university, making transportation to campus more convenient. Students arriving at JFK Airport may also choose to spend a short period in New York before traveling to campus, depending on their personal plans.

The speakers suggested that students consider factors such as budget, arrival time, and transportation arrangements when booking flights.

Since flight availability may vary depending on the season, students are encouraged to check flight information in advance and plan their arrival schedules accordingly.

How to Travel to Lehigh University After Arrival?

Transportation from the airport to campus is another common concern for incoming students.

The webinar introduced several common transportation options:

1. Ride-Sharing Services or Taxi

Students can use ride-sharing services such as Uber to travel from the airport to campus.

According to the webinar experience sharing, transportation costs from the airport to the university were approximately $100–$150 at that time, although prices may vary depending on travel time and traffic conditions.

2. Carpooling with Current Students

The speakers shared that Chinese student communities at Lehigh University often maintain communication channels.

During the beginning of the semester, some current students may offer airport pickup assistance or carpooling options. New students can communicate with current students in advance to find suitable transportation arrangements.

3. University Airport Pickup Services

Lehigh University may also provide airport pickup services during the orientation period.

However, the speakers reminded students that university pickup services usually have specific schedules and locations. Students should check the details in advance and plan according to their flight arrival times.

Graduate Student Housing Options at Lehigh University

Housing is another essential part of preparing to study abroad.

During the webinar, the speakers introduced several housing options available to graduate students at Lehigh University, including:

On-Campus Housing

On-campus housing is managed by the university, and students need to apply in advance.

The speakers mentioned that because campus housing resources are limited, graduate students should pay close attention to housing application information and deadlines.

Off-Campus Apartments

Some graduate students choose to live in off-campus apartments.

Off-campus housing usually provides more flexibility in terms of apartment types, locations, and roommate arrangements. Students can compare different options based on their personal needs.

House Rentals

In addition to apartments, some students choose to rent houses.

This option usually requires students to search for housing independently and select a living environment that matches their preferences and circumstances.

The speakers suggested that when choosing accommodation, students should consider factors such as distance from campus, transportation convenience, cost, and roommate arrangements.

Life Preparation Tips After Arriving in the United States

Beyond visas, flights, and housing, the webinar also shared practical advice for adjusting to life in the United States.

The speakers explained that students may need some time to adapt to a new environment, including shopping methods, transportation systems, and campus life routines.

Making preparations in advance can help reduce adjustment challenges during the first stage after arrival.

They also encouraged new students to actively communicate with the university, classmates, and current students to obtain useful information and support.

Advice for Incoming Lehigh University Graduate Students

At the end of the webinar, the speakers summarized their experiences and offered advice to future students.

They emphasized that thorough preparation before studying abroad is extremely important. In addition to completing essential tasks such as visa applications and housing arrangements, students should also learn about the university environment and understand their upcoming academic plans in advance.

After arriving at Lehigh University, actively communicating with professors and classmates and making full use of university resources will help students adapt more quickly to graduate-level study and life in the United States.

Through this Lehigh University Graduate Student Pre-Departure Guide Webinar, HYP Global hopes to help incoming students prepare more effectively before departure and begin their U.S. graduate school journey with greater confidence and readiness.
