Alumni Spotlight | From Engineering to Healthcare Pioneer: The Journey of a Tsinghua Medical Research Leader

At a recent Lehigh University Graduate School information session, we had the pleasure of welcoming alumnus Yu Xin, who studied in Lehigh University’s master’s program in Healthcare Systems Engineering. He currently serves as Research Director at the Data Standardization Research Center of Tsinghua University’s Institute for Hospital Management and the National Healthcare Service Data Center at Tsinghua University.

Xin’s insightful presentation generated considerable interest and lively discussion among the guests. To learn more about his professional journey and perspectives on the healthcare industry, student ambassador Miao Qi conducted an exclusive interview with him.

PART 01

From Engineering to Healthcare: Exploring a Cross-Industry Career Transition

Xin earned his bachelor’s degree in Electronic Information Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology. For graduate school, he changed direction and enrolled in Lehigh University’s Healthcare Systems Engineering program within the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

After graduation, he devoted himself to the field of healthcare management and worked as an analyst at several healthcare organizations in the United States. After five years of professional experience abroad, he returned to China during the COVID-19 pandemic. He now serves as Research Director at the Data Standardization Research Center of Tsinghua University’s Institute for Hospital Management and the National Healthcare Service Data Center at Tsinghua University.

“Since graduating, I have remained in the healthcare industry. I worked as an analyst in health insurance analytics, at a healthcare association, and later at a healthcare group in New Mexico. After returning to China, I joined a Grade-A tertiary hospital in Shenzhen. I later wanted to make better use of the technical skills I had acquired during graduate school, so I contacted the professor leading the Tsinghua team and joined Tsinghua University’s Data Standardization Research Center.”

Students enter the Healthcare Systems Engineering program with backgrounds in engineering, science, business, mathematics, and other disciplines. By graduation, they have developed a broad understanding of the healthcare industry and learned to apply design thinking as a problem-solving process.

They also acquire the technical skills needed to analyze healthcare systems, identify inefficiencies, and propose solutions or new processes that improve the overall quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery.

PART 02

Exploration and Innovation: Tsinghua University’s Research Mission

Xin’s work at Tsinghua University primarily focuses on the intersection of healthcare management and technological innovation. He noted that China is still exploring how industrial engineering methods can be used to manage healthcare institutions and the broader healthcare industry.

“Our work is not limited to technology. It also involves theoretical research and policy support. We provide policy recommendations and planning proposals to government authorities. We also apply operations research and machine-learning methods in major hospitals, developing digital tools to improve the efficiency of healthcare services.”

The Future of Healthcare and Biopharmaceuticals: Challenges and Opportunities

When discussing the future of healthcare and biopharmaceuticals, Xin first emphasized that healthcare and pharmaceuticals are two fundamentally different industries.

Healthcare is primarily centered on services and management. It is a knowledge-intensive industry that focuses on improving efficiency and controlling costs. One of its greatest challenges, particularly in the context of an aging population, is determining how to provide efficient and accessible healthcare services with limited resources.

This is a challenge faced by countries around the world. Both China and the United States are working to address the growing pressure that demographic changes place on healthcare financing, while ensuring that their social security and health insurance systems can manage future demand.

The pharmaceutical industry, by contrast, places greater emphasis on technological innovation and cost control. In China, the government has made reducing drug prices a major priority to ensure that healthcare remains affordable for the general public. Although this strategy helps protect public health, it also creates challenges, particularly when it comes to promoting technological progress while keeping costs under control.

One of the primary problems facing the pharmaceutical sector in the United States is drug misuse, particularly the misuse of opioids. Rather than improving public health, opioid misuse has contributed to further health and social problems.

Therefore, both China and the United States are exploring how existing healthcare and pharmaceutical resources can be used more effectively to meet future needs.

From a market perspective, the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries need more advanced technology, specialized knowledge, and innovation to address existing gaps and improve efficiency. However, new technologies can also increase costs, resulting in higher healthcare expenses for individuals.

In an aging society, rising healthcare costs can place enormous pressure on both public social insurance systems and private insurance providers. Finding the right balance under these circumstances is one of the greatest challenges we currently face.

Staying in the United States or Returning to China? Making a Thoughtful Career Decision

For many students approaching graduation, deciding whether to remain in the United States or return to China is an important choice. Drawing on his own experience, Xin offered the following advice:

“I recommend that graduates gain at least some professional experience in the United States so they can understand different working environments. The American job market is highly competitive, particularly for positions requiring advanced knowledge and technical expertise. If you challenge yourself and gain experience in the United States before returning to China, you will have a much clearer understanding of the differences between the two working environments.”

“Clear communication and the ability to interact effectively with others are essential to professional success. Do not be afraid of challenges. Be willing to accept new responsibilities, because every assignment is an opportunity to demonstrate your value.”

In his advice to younger students, Xin emphasized that the purpose of education is not simply to acquire knowledge but also to understand how that knowledge can be applied in practice.

“At Lehigh University, learning goes far beyond the content of textbooks. Through practical projects, conversations with professors, classroom discussions, guest lectures, and other learning opportunities, students should develop a deeper understanding of how their knowledge can be applied in real-world settings.”

“Finding an accomplished mentor and understanding American society and workplace culture are both extremely important to your future professional development.”
