As part of HYP Global’s ongoing U.S. university visit series, Doris Liu, Admissions Manager for Southern China, and Vera Zhang, Admissions Manager for Northwest China, recently visited several partner institutions across the United States, including Pepperdine University.

From campus atmosphere and academic culture to student services and career resources, these visits provide firsthand insights into the educational environments students may experience abroad.

This article explores one of California’s most visually distinctive private universities — Pepperdine University.

## First Stop: The West Los Angeles Graduate Campus

The visit began at Pepperdine University’s West Los Angeles Graduate Campus, located approximately six miles from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Unlike traditional residential campuses, this location primarily serves working professionals and graduate students pursuing flexible or career-focused education pathways.

Many students travel from across California — and even from other states such as New York — to attend classes here, making the urban campus location especially practical and accessible.

Another unique feature quickly became apparent:

Many faculty members actively work at the highest levels of their industries.

Some are executives from Wall Street financial institutions, others are senior technology leaders from Silicon Valley companies, and some are partners at internationally recognized law firms.

Several professors regularly fly in from different parts of the United States to teach, bringing current industry experience directly into the classroom.

The campus itself feels more like a modern executive workspace than a traditional academic setting.

The buildings resemble upscale office or residential complexes, while interior spaces are thoughtfully designed with open lounges, coffee stations, and flexible student work areas.

Even the classroom atmosphere carries a distinctly professional tone, creating an environment that feels closely connected to real-world business culture.

## Visiting the Malibu Campus

The following day, the HYP Global team visited Pepperdine’s iconic Malibu campus.

Under the guidance of Admissions Director Lee, the group toured the campus and participated in a series of conversations over lunch in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The Malibu campus is visually stunning.

Its central architectural landmark is the university chapel, surrounded by Spanish-style academic buildings and open courtyards overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Even on a cloudy day, the campus atmosphere remained unforgettable.

One of the most striking views on campus overlooks Pepperdine’s business school buildings, which resemble elegant California villas positioned directly above the coastline.

From classrooms, libraries, and outdoor terraces, nearly every direction offers sweeping ocean views.

It is difficult not to understand why Pepperdine is often associated with the idealized “California university experience.”

## Career Development and Personalized Student Support

During the visit to Pepperdine’s Career Center, university staff introduced the extensive career development support available to students.

The university provides highly individualized services, including:

- Dedicated resume coaching teams

- Career pathway advising

- Employer networking events

- Company visits and corporate immersion programs

- Customized industry partnership initiatives

In some cases, the university even arranges transportation for students to visit partner companies directly for professional engagement activities.

This level of personalized support reflects many of the advantages traditionally associated with elite private universities in the United States.

Pepperdine’s alumni network also plays a major role in student career development.

Graduates are active across business, law, media, entertainment, consulting, and public leadership sectors, and the university frequently invites alumni back to campus to mentor students and share professional experiences.

## Academic Experience: Small Classes and Practical Learning

Pepperdine maintains a strong emphasis on small class sizes and faculty accessibility.

The average class enrolls approximately 26 students, creating opportunities for closer interaction between students and professors.

Many courses also incorporate project-based and applied learning models rather than relying solely on lecture-style instruction.

This practical teaching approach encourages students to connect academic concepts directly with real-world challenges and professional environments.

The overall academic atmosphere feels highly interactive, personal, and mentorship-driven.

## A Campus Designed Around Quality of Life

One of the most memorable spaces on campus was the university library.

Large windows overlook the Pacific coastline, creating an unusually calm and inspiring study environment.

The facilities themselves are modern and well-equipped, including advanced technology resources and Apple workstations.

Across campus, beautifully maintained landscaping and outdoor gathering spaces contribute to a relaxed yet polished atmosphere.

Pepperdine’s signature blue-and-orange branding, campus shuttle system, and carefully designed student services reinforce the university’s distinctive identity and attention to student experience.

The campus layout itself is also unique.

Undergraduate programs are generally located lower on the hillside, while the graduate business school and law school occupy higher elevations overlooking the ocean.

To support movement across campus, the university operates shuttle buses approximately every ten minutes, making transportation between classrooms, cafés, dining halls, and residential areas highly convenient.

## Why Pepperdine Leaves Such a Strong Impression

Built along the hillsides of Malibu and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Pepperdine combines natural beauty with a highly international and professionally connected educational environment.

The surrounding area is known for its safety, affluence, and peaceful atmosphere, with most people in the area consisting of students, faculty members, and local residents.

At the same time, Pepperdine’s strong alumni network and leadership-oriented educational philosophy continue to produce graduates across business, law, public service, and global industries.

The university’s environment encourages not only academic growth, but also broader development in leadership, communication, and global perspective.

After visiting the campus in person, it became much easier to understand why Pepperdine holds such a distinctive reputation among students pursuing a California-based international education experience.

As one alumnus shared during the visit:

“If you want your California study experience to reach the next level, Pepperdine is the place to do it.”
