From Admission Counselor to Fortune 500 Strategy Leader: Reimagining Careers Through the Lehigh MBA
Alumni Spotlight | From Admission Counselor to Fortune 500 Strategy Leader: Reimagining Careers Through the Lehigh MBA
"One of the primary reasons I chose Lehigh was its distinctively high ratio of domestic students compared to peer institutions. I knew it would challenge me to immerse myself fully in authentic American culture and community life."
In this feature of our Global Alumni Series, we invite Zhiqi (Marco) Wang to share his transformative journey. Graduating with a bachelor's degree in International Economics and Trade from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Marco spent the early chapters of his career in the international education consulting sector. Seeking to break through professional growth ceilings, he stepped away from the workforce to pursue an MBA at the Lehigh University College of Business.
Today, Marco is the Senior Market Strategy Manager at Henkel China, a German-headquartered Fortune Global 500 leader. Prior to this role, he spearheaded digital marketing initiatives in the U.S. and served as a management consultant at Accenture.
This profile was conducted and compiled by Qihua, a fellow Lehigh MBA candidate, tracing how a seasoned education planner leveraged Lehigh’s ecosystem to engineer a masterful executive pivot. (Note: Exclusive Henkel alumni referral details are included at the conclusion of this article).

01. Returning to Campus: Turning a Career Pause into a Global Pivot
"After graduating from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2009, I entered the study-abroad counseling industry. Three years of immersive work gave me an intimate understanding of the American higher education landscape. However, by 2012, I felt a strong desire to explore broader corporate horizons. I chose to step away from my comfort zone and enrolled in Lehigh’s MBA program.
My objectives were clear: I wanted to acquire advanced corporate frameworks, gain a global perspective, and execute a structural career pivot. Looking back a decade later, that single step was undeniably the turning point of my professional life.
The MBA program successfully reshaped my trajectory. Upon graduation, I pivoted directly into digital marketing in the U.S. before returning to Shanghai. My first role back in China was as an analyst for Accenture, one of the world’s premier management consulting firms. Navigating diverse market sectors at Accenture prepared me to transition to the client side as a corporate marketing strategist. Last year, I joined Henkel as Senior Market Strategy Manager, where I currently oversee market intelligence analytics, project management, and macro strategic execution."
02. Inside a Fortune Global 500 Multinationals: Culture, Pace, and Progression
Having spent the vast majority of his career within multinational corporations (MNCs), Marco offers a nuanced look into the corporate realities of global firms operating in China.
Corporate Culture & Equilibrium
"A defining characteristic of these global enterprises is their genuine respect for employee work-life balance. There is no systemic expectation to sacrifice personal or family life for corporate output. Simultaneously, these organizations actively cultivate an inclusive sense of belonging through structured team-building events, family days, and internal milestone celebrations."
The Nuance of Corporate Language
"Prospective applicants often ask about the language barrier. In MNC regional headquarters within China, the day-to-day spoken language remains predominantly Mandarin since your colleagues and leadership are mostly local professionals. English is seamlessly activated when collaborating with global stakeholders or crafting executive emails.
The industry cliché of 'mixing English buzzwords into Chinese conversations' stems entirely from practical efficiency. Terms like KPI, align, or deadline carry highly specific, standardized definitions within global corporate frameworks. Translating them into literal Chinese can cloud their operational meaning; using the exact English nomenclature keeps the team aligned."
Pacing & Career Trajectories
"Workloads vary across sectors, but within the B2B manufacturing domain where large-scale, long-cycle procurements dictate the market, the corporate rhythm is naturally structured and deliberate. It allows professionals breathing room to think deeply without being suffocated by daily volatility.
In terms of advancement, MNCs generally present a more structured, methodical promotion ladder compared to hyper-growth private local firms. In these global systems, you often observe two distinct profiles: professionals who stay with a single firm for decades, growing organically, and agile professionals who advance by navigating strategic moves across different multinationals. Your path ultimately depends on your personal ambition, working style, and long-term vision."
Securing the Gateways to MNCs
"There is no denying that a premium academic pedigree opens the first door. While a background from top domestic universities is standard, a degree from a top-tier U.S. institution like Lehigh satisfies global recruiting criteria.
Lehigh carries an added advantage because our alumni have historically served as cornerstones of the financial and corporate world—producing leaders like Cathy Engelbert (former CEO of Deloitte and the first female CEO of a Big Four firm), the pioneering founders of KPMG, and former CEOs of Dow Jones.
Beyond the resume header, proactive ownership and measurable achievements are the ultimate differentiators. Many candidates mistake resume building for a passive chronological list of duties. Recruiters look for impact. Whether it is an initiative you led within a student association, a complex case study engineered in a classroom team, or a brief internship, the focus must always be on the quantifiable value you created. That is how you stand out during executive screening and interviews."
03. The MBA Blueprint: Maximizing Your ROI on Campus
"The structural purpose of an MBA is to forge adaptive leaders. Because corporate management lacks a universal formula, leaders must continuously diagnose novel problems and make high-stakes decisions under uncertainty. The true value of Lehigh’s MBA lies in training your cognitive frameworks, broadening your strategic vision, and enhancing both your hard and soft skills to navigate the next phase of your career. For those looking to maximize their experience, I emphasize three key strategies:"
Deepen Functional Expertise
"One of my slight reflections is that I wish I had explored even more highly specialized elective tracks during my time. Developing a deep, granular mastery over a specific niche—such as advanced supply chain models or digital analytics architecture—gives you sharper analytical depth and expands your initial market placement."
Transform Classroom Consulting into Resume Assets
"Lehigh’s industry-integrated curriculum is a goldmine for international students without extensive local corporate footprints. In our management consulting courses, we were deployed to execute live consulting projects directly for real-world corporate clients. This hands-on experience translates into powerful, interview-ready resume highlights. Furthermore, Lehigh pairs every student with academic, career, and executive advisors—utilize this ecosystem to the fullest."
Overcome the 'Silence Barrier'
"Many international students face initial cultural barriers in the American classroom. Coming from educational models that favor reflective listening, Asian students can sometimes appear overly quiet. It is vital to overcome this psychological barrier early. Speak up, engage in debates, and let your insights be seen.
Graduation is not the finish line; it is a product launch. In the job market, you are the product, and recruiting is the art of strategic brand positioning. Convincing an enterprise that your brand is premium, reliable, and better suited than competing talent is your primary strategic challenge. Throughout this process and beyond, Lehigh’s robust alumni network will remain your lifelong strategic asset."
04. Lehigh: The Embodiment of 'Work Hard, Play Hard'
"Most students who choose Lehigh share a common appreciation for its unique identity. As a prestigious, historic institution frequently recognized as a 'Hidden Ivy' on the East Coast, Lehigh offers a beautiful, close-knit campus, elite faculty-to-student ratios, and immense academic prestige. Situated strategically within the New York-Philadelphia-New Jersey economic triangle, it commands a vast geographic footprint for career placement.
For me, the decisive factor was Lehigh’s authentic campus composition. The high representation of domestic students forced me out of cultural silos, accelerating my understanding of American corporate and social realities.
Lehigh truly embodies the philosophy of 'Work Hard, Play Hard.' Academically, the rigor is uncompromising. Across our core colleges, the cross-disciplinary synergies are dense, the academic expectations are elite, and the degree carries immense market value.
On the flip side, the university matches this intensity with world-class athletic facilities, golf courses, art galleries, and a vibrant student life. From executive networking dinners to university-sanctioned campus celebrations, Lehigh offers an absolute treasure trove of experiences. The deeper you explore this campus, the more unexpected rewards it returns."
